wellness as spaciousness
giving ourselves space to exist as we are
Summer is such a lively and lovely time-mother nature is bright, active, showing off all of her divine skills with brightly colored plants and produce, booming thunderstorms, the flit of a firefly, the sounds of a fire crackling…what a joy to witness the cycles of our natural world. These cycles also exist in us, of course. For all the energy we expend we need rest. For all of our efforts, we receive grace (if we slow down enough to notice). For every extreme there is a balancing opposite.
We get to meditate the space between on and off, light and dark, plans and unstructured time. We choose how much energy we spend worrying about what we can’t control. What I’ve been able to tap into this summer is a spaciousness around this balancing act-it can be hard to get quiet enough to figure out what I need. But with the slower pace of summer, I have been able to notice when my body is asking for space-more time, more ease, more flow. It’s almost like I’m charging my batteries by leaning into the season-being outdoors, being creative, taking my time. Without space, we can feel pushed into a corner or forced into one way of doing something.
Wellness, or the privilege to be able to make a choice, comes when we slow down and open up to the question-what do I really need in this moment? When we make more space for ourselves to simply be, it can become more comfortable to be in the unknown. To approach a growing edge. To ask the hard questions, when they come. So, invite in however you are feeling. Slow down and feel into what you need. Create space-simply by releasing judgement- in the midst of complication, busyness, and other people’s timelines. It’s ok to move at your own pace. Another thing that helps create this space is gratitude-simply becoming aware of everything that is here to support you (heart beating, lungs breathing). Even when things seem like they’re falling apart, gratitude can steer us back to creating the space that we need to be truly well.
